Sharing Metadata Across Institutions
Session Leader(s): Darren Hardy
Aims and Goals:
Discuss alternatives for sharing metadata between OGP instances, and between
metadata support staff.
Discovery across institutions relies on some sort of metadata syncing between repositories. Thegoal of this discussion is to begin developing both a technical and policy framework for decoupling the metadata from any particular discovery implementation, which we argue will allow institutions to more easily accommodate localized concerns while still gaining the benefits of shared resources. Current support for syncing in OGP 1.2 is limited and heavily tied to specific technologies (Solr and FGDC). The benefits of a more standardized approach to metadata exchange include greater flexibility and an easier path to interoperability. Several candidate standards exist in this space, and we would like, in particular, to highlight OAIPMH and Atom as possible solutions. Any method of exchange that we adopt should be able to support multiple metadata formats, including ISO, FGDC, MODS, etc.
