Tile Caching

Tile Caching
Session Leader(s): Carl Zimmerman
Background & Agenda:
We will provide a very brief introduction to the topic and describe a few of the issues we are dealing with at Tufts; and then open the conversation to the group.

Potential Topics to Cover
What are the system software/architecture approaches that people are using (e.g. OpenGeo and GeoWebCache vs. Tile Mill vs. Tile Cache) to cache data?
Open source versus commercial approaches? Raster versus vector?

What are the software approaches/issues for handling  “preseeding” of caches?
Should the caching processes be different?  Should they be independent of each other? What are the easiest/best/most feasible methods of data storage? What data format should the tiles be in when they are stored?

How much preprocessing is necessary BEFORE seeding occurs in the Caching software? And where should it be done? How have people handled it?

Given the potentially large data storage requirements that tile caching and preseeding requires, what kind of hardware and software requirements do extensive preseeding efforts require? Is reintegration of the data problematic? Best approaches?
